Some experts say we are moving back to the pre-antibiotic era. No. This will be a post-antibiotic era. In terms of new replacement antibiotics, the pipeline is virtually dry. A post-antibiotic era means, in effect, an end ot modern medicine as we know it. Things as common as strep throat or a child’s scratched knee could once again kill.
Margaret Chan, Director General WHO
Antimicrobial resistance exists in every country in the world, and is considered to be one of the greatest threats to global health. As of 2016, the antibiotic pipeline consisted of only 37 antibiotics undergoing clinical trials in the US. Most of these 37 antibiotics tackle gram-positive bacterial resistance. Of greater concern is the more virulent and more difficult to treat gram-negative bacterial resistance.
